As he drew back the curtains, he tried to grasp what he saw behind the glass. The sun passed from an airy giant and poured its light onto the unfamiliar and spectacular landscape. Jade hills stretched into the horizon, blending into a gradient of golden beaches and cerulean seas. Trees climbed from the ground to the sky, their large canopy shading the earth from the ocean above. Shrubs of all sizes decorated the bases of the wooden giants, their wild shapes speckled with round berries. And leaves, past their time, littered the ground only slightly, pushed aside by a contrasting spectrum of life-filled irises and lilies.

He quickly pulled open the window and stuck his head outside, trying to breath in what he couldn't believe. A flock of birds spread from one of the trees and flew by. Suddenly, he was in the middle of all he was seeing. He could feel the soft grass under his feet, he smelled the irises and heard the sounds of the busy insects and singing sparrows. It really was all that he had ever dreamed.

Then, with an abrupt crash, the soft grass below his feet became hot, dry pavement. The trees morphed into skyscrapers, the gentle push of the waves in the distant ocean became beeping horns and busy voices.

He was back in reality. A book fell from the shelves in his apartment, waking him from his magnificent daydream. As he peered outside his window he realized then just how grey and lifeless the world really was to him. The beautiful flowers became newspaper stands and sidewalks, the singing birds turned to squawking pigeons, and the trees--the brilliant red giants--became nothing more than concrete buildings.

He peered beyond the glass one last time before pulling the curtains back into place.
An exercise for school. Unrevised.
